Have you ever noticed how one small thought can suddenly turn into a hundred, creating overthinking? Before you know it, you’re analysing conversations for fear of judgement, worrying about the future and failures, replaying the past, or imagining every possible outcome. Overthinking doesn’t simply make you think more; it steals your peace, drains your energy, and makes even simple decisions feel overwhelming.
The frustrating part is that most people don’t realise they’re overthinking until it has become a habit. They believe they’re solving problems when, in reality, they’re creating more stress. The mind becomes so busy searching for certainty that it never gives itself permission to rest.
The good news is that you don’t have to silence every thought; you simply need to change your relationship with them.
1. Ask Yourself when Overthinking: “Is This Thought Helping Me?”
Not every thought deserves your attention.
When you notice yourself going around in circles, pause and ask:
“Is this thought helping me move forward, or is it simply keeping me stuck?”
If the answer is “stuck,” redirect your attention to what you can control today. This simple question interrupts the cycle of overthinking and brings you back into the present moment.
2. Stop Looking for the Perfect Answer
Many people overthink because they’re searching for certainty.
- They want the perfect decision.
- They perfect timing
- The perfect words
- The perfect outcome, so you think of worst-case scenarios
But life rarely offers perfect certainty.
Instead, ask yourself: “What is the next small step I can take?”
Progress creates confidence. Waiting for certainty often creates fear.
3. Discover What’s Driving the Overthinking
Overthinking is often a symptom rather than the real problem. It can sometimes:
- come from fear of failure or even fear of success
- be afraid of rejection
- show up as a lack of confidence or trusting yourself
- simply be because your nervous system has become stuck in survival mode
When you understand the root cause, your thoughts naturally begin to quieten because your mind no longer needs to stay on constant alert. Real change happens when you work beneath the thoughts rather than trying to fight them.
